The motivation challenge:
There are lots of reasons why it's tough to stay motivated. Do any of these sound like something you've experienced?
Studying feels boring.
I feel overwhelmed and don’t know where to start.
I don’t know how to study.
I delay studying because I’m afraid of failing.
I have so many school/work/family commitments that I find it difficult to concentrate on IELTS.
When I compare myself to others, I start to feel discouraged.
These challenges are common, but we can overcome them with the right strategies. Understanding what affects your motivation and finding ways to deal with them is crucial. Discovering what motivates you will help you stay on track and do well in your IELTS preparation.
Why do we need motivation?
Well, motivation is like your secret superpower during your exam journey. It's what keeps you going, even when things get tough or you have a lot on your plate. When you are motivated, you're more likely to stick to your study plan and stay on track, even when you face difficulties. Plus, you'll find it easier to set and achieve your goals. But when you lack motivation, concentrating on your exam becomes a challenge, and setbacks and difficulties can easily discourage you So, let's focus on finding ways to boost your motivation, which will help you succeed on your IELTS journey with confidence.
5 tips to help with motivation:
1. Set Clear Goals
A great way to stay motivated is to have clear, achievable goals. Break your IELTS preparation into smaller, easier steps. For example, if you want to get a 7 in the Reading Exam, you could break that large goal into smaller goals:
Read a news article a day: write a summary to check your understanding of the article and write down any new vocabulary you learned.
Practice a different type of reading question at each study session.
Complete one practice test each week and aim to get a certain number of questions correct.
Having clear goals gives you a sense of purpose and direction. When you study and break these goals into smaller steps, it stops you from getting overwhelmed.
2. Track Your Progress
When you keep a journal or use an app to track your progress, you will see how you’re improving over time. You can measure your accomplishments against the goals you have set and as you achieve them you can set new, challenging goals. This ongoing process of setting and reaching goals can keep you motivated and engaged in your learning journey.
3. Mix Up Your Study Materials
Don't stick to a single study resource. Explore different IELTS preparation materials such as textbooks, online courses, mobile apps, and practice tests Trying different materials can make studying more interesting and enjoyable.
4. Reward Yourself
Having a reward system can help you stay motivated and give you something to look forward to. After achieving a specific goal or completing a task, treat yourself to something you enjoy. It could be watching your favourite TV show, making your favourite snack, or spending time with friends and family .
5. Stay Positive
In high-pressure situations, we often become self-critical and negative, making studying tough. Stay positive by valuing your progress and replacing self-criticism with encouraging self-talk. Embrace mistakes as part of learning and use phrases like "I'm doing my best" or "I can learn from this." Practice self-compassion, knowing it's okay to make mistakes – they're chances to grow and learn.
